SVA student nail sculpture

Recently, I encountered this sculpture in a display window of the SVA (School of Visual Arts) Westside Gallery in Chelsea.  It caught my attention with its intricate construction – hundreds of individual hardware nails glued together to form a hemisphere and four-pronged base.  It appears simultaneously dangerous, yet delicate.  My original photo had more glare and reflection, so while making adjustments, I decided it would look better in black & white.  I think the treatment gives it a nice vintage quality, and has a secondary effect of activating the surrounding elements as a supplemental installation.  There was no title card, but all works featured at the gallery are by matriculated students.
